On Tuesday 18th March, 2025, ETC organised a workshop for “Inclusion of people with neurodivergences into church life.” The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Mary Peterson, from Texas USA. She shared from her experience and knowledge, since she provides training internationally in educational and the public health sectors. She has studied and worked with autistic children and people for many years and is a mother of autistic children. The Conversations around autism are important to Dr. Peterson along with spreading awareness of autism. The more people are made aware of autism, trisomy 21, ADHD, dyslexia and other neurodivergence, the less these persons suffer. Around 45 people from various churches attended. They were people in various ministries in their respective community of faith: children ministry, bible study leaders, deacons, elders – as well as parents, teachers of pre-primary, ETC students. Participants identified needs for churches and Christians to address: are we aware that there are neurodivergence in our churches? Do they feel included? Are they valued? Are worship services and other church activities accessible? What about arrangement of the physical environment? Participants learnt about sound volume, physical touch, eye contacts, use of pictures and illustrations, proper use of language, and other important matters we need to consider to become an inclusive church. ETC will look into providing further assistance with the help of persons involved in this area of neurodivergence. “If you can’t read so well, have earing difficulties, speak a different language, have working memory difficulties, or find it hard to sit and listen, then a visual image is there for longer than the words you speak.” (includedbygrace)

Online conversation with Dr. Peterson. Follow up of workshop

There was a follow up online conversation between Dr. Peterson on the evening of 19th May. There was an attendance of about 20 people, mostly those who had attended the live workshop.

Dr. Peterson shared on very practical matters, such as potty training, the use of toilets, change of environment. The second topic was on communication skills for non-verbal children, and Argumentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

The breakaway groups had 2 questions: “One strategy that worked for you recently”; and “One question or struggle you need support”. We heard very interesting testimonies, sharing of experiences, and questions.

Questions were such as: what about feeling? How do we deal with it? At times the person expresses feeling by strong physical actions, and at times totally silent, showing no reaction.

A Theology of Disability

How to include the neurodivergent in church life.

During the Covid years, TIO associates based in Ireland did a series of online workshops for about a dozen of interested persons, from various churches, including students of ETC. Rosalienne Donaldson, one of the facilitators then, reconnected with us, and took time to do a special session. This was held on Saturday 31st May, 2025.

We proposed the theme of Theology of Disability. The participants targeted was those in leadership roles in churches and Christian organisations. Ten participants attended, with 2 from overseas. One was in Bahrein, and another in South Africa. One Christian organization was represented.

Although people prefer more personal experience activities, we believe solid theological inquiry is part of Christian life and ministry. The workshops offer time for clergy to refresh and ministry newcomers to engage in theological reflection.

And indeed, there were some highly instructive biblical reflections, exchanges, testimonies, sharing of experiences, discussions on cultural settings, and a video that was very emotional on one person’s personal challenges.

ETC will offer another opportunity for leaders and influencers in churches and Christian organisations to engage in theological concerns.

The theme will be: Jesus’ compassion and inclusion of all with disabilities

This is planned for Saturday 28th June at 4pm Online
